I’ve been toying with the idea of trying color capping in our main bedroom for some time and finally decided to give it a go. Color Capping is a tonal painting technique where you use multiple shades from the same color family. Typically it’s light → mid → dark resulting in a vertical gradient that ends with the darkest shade on the ceiling.

a peek at the process
Before the room was painted in Benjamin Moore Palazzo Pink which was quite lovely but maybe a tad too serene for my Scorpio sign:-). I like a bit of excitement. The new ceiling color is Benjamin Moore Pink Mix (a medium red) and wall color is Benjamin Moore Pink Punch. You can see a bit more of the process from this reel.

What color capping actually does
- Draws the eye upward, making ceilings look taller and rooms feel more architectural.
- Adds depth and dimension without the full commitment of color drenching.
- Uses smooth tonal transitions, not stark contrasts, so the room feels intentional and layered.
- Works with or without molding. You can use existing trim as break points or create your own visual divisions.

Would you try the color capping technique in a space? xx
